Over 180 parents and students gathered at Pinewood Elementary School on the evening of September 30th decked out in pirate garb for Reader’s of the Caribbean (RoC), a pirate-themed family literacy workshop. The cafeteria was transformed into an island paradise where workshop creator, Dr. Angela Walker, became the captain of a pirate ship and engaged participants in an exciting evening of highly interactive literacy activities. Families enjoyed pizza and snacks at the event and received RoC maps to use at home during the next month to implement the effective reading strategies and literacy activities they learned.
The Brevard Public Schools’ Office of Title I sponsored this evening event, as well as a Train-the-Trainer RoC In-service during the day for elementary Reading Coaches and teachers to learn how to replicate this workshop in their schools. Brevard Public Schools is well aware of the importance of engaging our families in learning and partnering with them to promote student achievement. Be on the lookout for a RoC adventure coming to an elementary school near you!
