De Laura Middle School art teacher Vickki Thacker
submitted over 600 pieces of student artwork to be included in the
“Reform” Art exhibition focusing on Education, that opened this week in New
York City as part of an 19’ W x 8’ L artwork done by the artist Derek
Gores. Mr. Gores (a De Laura alumni) is a local artist of national
prominence using collage as his chosen medium. The exhibition expected 10,000
viewers and celebrity guests. The students made collages integrating other core
subjects; Math-using the Arabic algorithms, Science-using the DNA helix,
Art-black on black understanding color/light theory & Music- using symbols
to construct subject matter. Science teachers; Slavka Roselip, Diane
Westcott, Angie Oswalt and Chorus teacher Andrea Smith assisted in their
classes with the project. Mr. Gores has also agreed to be a presenter at De
