While visiting his grandmother, Mary Bohannoon, this past, Collin Hyatt, a 6th grader at McRae Elementary, put into practice what he learned in Mrs. Sneed’s first grade class… 5 years ago! The two were shopping in St. John’s County when Collin’s grandmother, who is diabetic, became ill and felt as if she might pass out from low blood sugar. Thankfully, she was able to pull over and stop in a nearby parking lot. That’s when Collin pulled out his cell phone and called 911. When rescue arrived, Collin remained calm, explained his grandmother’s medical condition and remembered to call the necessary family contacts. He did say he was nervous and a little scared, but still managed to do what was necessary to help his grandmother.
In October, Collin was awarded a Certificate of Recognition. Russell Bentz of St. Johns County’s Fire and Rescue recognized Collin at school in front of his peers and, of course his family, with his grandmother smiling the biggest smile ever.
A valuable lesson, taught by a caring teacher, paid off!
