For most girls, being named their school's homecoming queen is an exciting and thrilling experience, and this year was no exception at Fletcher High School when Cara Stieglitz, a 12th-grader with Down Syndrome, took home the crown.
Cara is in the chorus program, a member of the bowling team and an executive intern in an assistant principal's office. During each of Fletcher High's Challenge Day events, Cara participated in the program and interacted with a lot of students who had the opportunity to see her as the beautiful young person that she is. Through these activities, Cara has become well known by the student body, and her peers have come to respect and protect her.
Principal Dane Gilbert says that Cara's growth and progress for the four years she has attended Fletcher have been impressive, particularly her social awareness and interpersonal skills, which are a result of her confidence.
“Fletcher students have big hearts and came through in a big way by voting for Cara,” said Principal Gilbert. “It was a dream come true for her and speaks volumes about our Fletcher students.”
