Hundreds Celebrate Alimacani Elementary 20th Anniversary

Current and former students and staff, as well as community members, the school’s business partners and district administrators recently gathered at Alimacani Elementary to celebrate the school’s 20th anniversary. Nearly a thousand people were in attendance to recognize the school’s “20 years of timeless treasures.”

Alimacani opened its doors for the first time to students in August 1990. The school’s name is a Timucuan Indian word that is translated to mean "sweet land by the sea," and its mascot is the Alimacani Chief.

The event started off with a flag raising ceremony, and then current and former students and staff proudly joined together to sing the school song. Many students were dressed in costume and displayed signs they had made proclaiming "Happy Birthday, Alamacani." A giant cake was a special treat for everyone to enjoy in honor of the school’s anniversary.

One of the most exciting events of the day was the opening of the school’s time capsule, which had been buried in 2000. Former and current students opened the capsule to reveal pictures, student notes, magazines, a yearbook and more. The school will be burying another time capsule this year to be opened in 2020.

Principal Kathy Stalls reflected upon Alimacani’s Elementary 20 great years of education, and thanked everyone in attendance for their support. Throughout the year, current students and staff will be celebrating the school’s 20 years of success, as this year’s school-wide theme for instruction is ‘Celebrate 20 for the Tribe.’
