Vision Screening Program Sees Success

Did you know the DCPS’ Vision Services Program screens students for early identification of vision problems, and offers referral and follow-up services aimed toward correcting these problems?

During the 2009/2010 school year, nearly 70,000 students received free vision screenings through the district’s Vision Services Program. More than 6,200 students were referred for additional eye exams.

"Good vision is essential for a student’s maximum success in school," said Vision Clinician Dot Mathias. According to Mathias, Duval County is the only county in the state that has a system-wide coordinated vision program that is community based, meaning that the community and the school system work together to improve the vision of its students.

“Thank you so much for this screening,” said one parent. “I had no idea or indication from my daughter that she had a vision impairment.”

Due to the generosity of the community and its volunteers, the vision screening program continues to grow in strength and support.

A whopping 1,467 trained volunteers assisted with the screenings, contributing more than 6,000 hours in 156 schools.

The DCPS’ Vision Services Program appreciates the dedication of all its volunteers, the medical community, vision coordinators, office staff and the many other community agencies who help make the vision program so successful.
