As of August, 2009, Highlands Elementary established a chapter of the National Elementary Honor Society to recognize our most outstanding students. Our school is designated as a “Founding Chapter of NEHS” joining elementary schools around the nation in establishing a program to promote excellence in academic achievement and involvement in leadership and service for the nation’s youngest students. In addition, Highlands Elementary is the first elementary school in Indian River County to join the National Elementary Honor Society with 38 new inductees our first year. At the local level, the chapters are supervised by a faculty advisor, and at Highlands Elementary, it is Sue DiDomizio, 4th/5th grade math teacher. She is charged with supervising the selection of new members and inducting them at a special ceremony. This year it will be held at the Courthouse Executive Center on Wednesday, May 4th, 2011. In addition, once members are selected, the chapter will organize service projects and other activities that support the purposes of the organization. Dr. Lillian Torres-Martinez, Principal, said, “Our National Honor Society chapter is another way our school is creating lifelong learners that will contribute to society. The National Honor Society chapter at Highlands promotes leadership skills by involving students in community service activities. These activities enable our students to develop leadership skills that will last a lifetime while encouraging them to become contributing citizens to society.”
