Emma E. Booker Elementary School students are putting a “green” spin on personalized pizza. Students celebrated the end of the school year by feasting on pizza with homemade sauce, made with ingredients they grew themselves. The party will took place at 9 a.m. Tuesday (June 1) in the school’s cafeteria.
Students have been growing vegetables since February using EarthBoxes, self-contained growing systems that use less fertilizer and water than are needed for in-ground gardens. The school partnered with Siesta Key Chapel to help fund and construct the boxes. Among the students’ crops were tomatoes, peppers and basil, which they will use to create their sauce.
The pizza party included the students, parents, teachers and volunteers. While their individual pizzas were baking in the cafeteria ovens, the children enjoyed the book “Curious George and the Pizza Party,” by Margret & H.A. Rey, with the adults.
